About Me
In short, my name is Antonio Goncalves and I am a senior software architect living in Paris. I work as a consultant in helping customers to set up their software architecture. My specialities are Java / Java EE and Open Source frameworks that evolve around it. As a former
BEA consultant I have a great expertise in application servers (Weblogic, JBoss and GlassFish).
As I am passionate about Java, I try to help the community as much as I can. That is publishing
articles, writing
books, teaching at
university and also creating a
Java User Group (JUG) in Paris.
In details
I graduated with a degree in Computer Science from
CNAM University (France) in 1995 and one year later had a Master of Science at
Brighton University (UK). This European MSc was linked with the
Universidad del Pais Vasco (Spain) where I did half of the term and a research project on Corba at the
Universidade Federal de São Carlos (Brazil).
In 1996 I worked with C++ as a consultant for a French telecommunication company (Cegetel) and in 1998 I discovered Java. I was excited about this new language and furthermore I wanted to leave C++ behind me. By looking around carefully I managed to work in an architect team for
Europcar. Europcar wanted to manage fidelity points on-line. It was the beginning of the web, the beginning of the business to customer time. Really exciting and challenging. That's when I discovered Weblogic and decided to move to London where I worked 2 years for
BEA Systems as a Weblogic consultant. From 1999 to 2001, I worked for big companies (
EDS,
British Airways,
Dutch Bank...) throughout the UK and in Europe, as well as little startups in the City doing J2EE consultancy and training.
I left BEA at the end of 2001 and after a few months break in South America I finally came back to Paris where I worked as a Java EE architect for a financial company (
SGAM) and a telecommunication company (
SFR). At the same time I graduated as an IT engineer at the
CNAM where I also have been
teaching Java EE since 2002. The teaching I'm doing is the source of inspiration of the
Java EE 5 book I wrote. Teaching is also a way to share knowledge, like writing
articles.
Having worked in various cultures, I am very interested in the difference in attitudes and communication in the workplace. Being completely fluent in French, English, Portuguese and Spanish helped me in communicating with various nationalities. Having worked for different customers gave me a strong experience in various technologies and architecture. Still having a link with university gives me access to research,
publication and a view of future IT directions.
My current focus is on finding challenging positions where I can make robust architecture design using object-oriented methodologies and Java EE. I use UML extensively which allows me to design software with a top-down view.
Furthermore, I am a profound Open Source evangelist. I always take Open Source into consideration when advising my customers. I also use Open Source in my classes and make my students develop Open Source projects. I am a member of the
OSSGTP. I am also a
JCP Expert Member of various JSRs (
Java EE 6,
JPA 2.0 and
EJB 3.1).
I have recently created a Java User Group in Paris. It's called
ParisJUG and its aim is to have monthly meetings with French and international Java actors.
